Google Ads Text Customization: What to Check First

Should you enable Google Ads text customization?

Enable Google Ads text customization only when your source pages are accurate, your offer boundaries are clear, and someone owns ongoing asset review. Use previews to find misleading claims before launch, not as proof that every future ad is approved. For bilingual Hong Kong campaigns, check meaning separately in each language.

The useful decision is not whether AI can write a plausible headline. It is whether your business can stand behind the promise a customer reads. A service advertised as available across Hong Kong might actually exclude particular locations. A consultation described as free might require a paid booking. Automated copy makes those gaps an advertising concern, not just a website housekeeping task.

What does the setting actually change?

Google Ads text customization is a campaign-level setting within AI Max for Search campaigns. According to Google’s documentation, it generates additional headlines and descriptions using context that includes your domain, landing page, existing ads and ad-group keywords. These assets can appear alongside the responsive search ad assets you supplied yourself.

That makes source quality an operating requirement. The system is not simply proofreading an approved headline library. It can create new wording from material that your marketing team may not have reviewed recently. An old service description can therefore matter even when the current campaign brief is accurate.

Keep your own headlines and descriptions. Before enabling the setting, record the campaign’s intended offer, audience, language and destination. Treat text customization as permission to generate within those boundaries, not permission to invent a broader service. If the boundaries cannot be stated clearly, fix the brief and source content before changing the setting.

What can asset previews prove?

Asset previews show sample generated headlines and descriptions before you opt in to text customization or launch a campaign. Search Engine Roundtable’s coverage highlights this pre-launch view, while Google’s documentation describes the examples as a representative sample. You can inspect examples without enabling text customization itself.

Use that distinction carefully. A clean preview is evidence that the samples look acceptable, not a permanent approval of everything the system might generate. Review each example against the actual landing page and your commercial terms. Ask whether an unfamiliar buyer could reasonably read a stronger promise than you intended.

Save the URL, sample wording, review decision and reviewer in your campaign notes. If the sample drops a material condition, correct the underlying content before trying again. If it merely sounds generic, improve the source explanation rather than adding more unsupported selling points. The preview is a diagnostic tool, not a substitute for ongoing responsibility.

Which website details should a Hong Kong SME check?

Start with the pages that describe the promoted offer, then inspect related domain content that could contradict them. This is a targeted claims review, not a request to redesign the website. Look for the difference between a claim that sounds attractive and a promise that operations can fulfil.

  • Price conditions: distinguish a starting price from an inclusive price, and explain what is excluded.

  • Service coverage: state location restrictions, delivery limits and appointment requirements where relevant.

  • Availability: remove expired promotions and services that are no longer offered.

  • Evidence: remove guarantees, superlatives or qualifications that the business cannot substantiate.

  • Language parity: check that English and Traditional Chinese pages describe the same commercial terms.

For an illustrative local service business, “free assessment” and “assessment fee credited after purchase” are different offers. Do not let a headline blur them. Have the person responsible for sales or delivery confirm the wording, because a fluent editor may not know the operational exception.

Make the correction on the source page as well as in your campaign notes. Otherwise the advertising team is approving a boundary that the available website content still contradicts.

How should you handle guidelines and bilingual meaning?

Google documents text guidelines as a beta feature for refining text-customized assets. Check availability in your account before building a workflow around it. Where available, term exclusions and messaging restrictions can help express brand limits. They do not replace accurate source material or review of your own uploaded assets.

Write restrictions around concrete risks. “Do not imply guaranteed approval” is more useful than “sound professional”. Keep an internal approved-claims list even when a platform control is unavailable. If the offer requires wording you cannot safely preserve, leave text customization off for that campaign until the risk is resolved.

For Hong Kong audiences, review English and Traditional Chinese independently rather than approving a literal translation. Check whether urgency, eligibility and payment conditions carry the same meaning. Google’s current documentation says text customization supports all Google Ads languages; language support does not guarantee suitable Hong Kong phrasing. Keep essential qualifications visible on the destination page and reject examples that change the offer.

Who checks the copy after launch?

Assign a named campaign owner before enabling the setting. Google’s reporting instructions explain that generated text assets can be identified by “Google AI” in the “Added by” column. Use the asset report to inspect actual wording, not just the samples saved before launch.

Revisit the review whenever pricing, coverage or promotions change. Record misleading assets and follow the available account controls to address them; consider turning the setting off if you cannot keep the promise accurate. Judge business outcomes alongside copy quality. A rise in clicks is not enough if enquiries reveal that customers misunderstood the offer. Include this ownership requirement when comparing marketing services or dividing work between your team and an agency.

FAQ

Can I view examples without enabling text customization?

Yes. Google says asset previews can show representative examples before opt-in. Use them to review the source URL and sample wording without treating the preview as approval of future assets.

Should I remove my existing headlines?

No. Google recommends keeping advertiser-created headlines and descriptions. Text customization generates additional assets that can serve alongside them, rather than replacing the need for your own accurate copy.

Is this suitable for every offer?

Not necessarily. If essential conditions are difficult to express, the source pages conflict, or nobody can monitor generated wording, keep the setting off until those issues are resolved. That is a business risk decision, not a judgement about writing fluency.

What this means for Hong Kong SMEs

Choose a campaign you are considering for text customization and create a short claims checklist with its owner. Compare the source page, generated examples and actual offer before making the enablement decision. Record what would trigger a pause, especially a missing qualification or a changed price condition. If you need a starting point, request a marketing audit and bring the landing page plus your approved offer wording.
